2015: Game plan of northern PDP exposed

Months after some governors elected on the platform of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dumped the party for All Progressives Congress (APC), fresh facts have emerged on why governors Aliyu Babangida of Niger State and Sule Lamido of Jigawa State declined to join the opposition party. They were actually left behind to engage incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in a political “fight” from within.

The decision to leave both governors, it was gathered, was part of the calculations of the North to democratically wrestle power from the the incumbent President.

When Millions are displaced by few, the leadership is clueless

Frankly put, when millions of good citizens are forced to run from and be displaced by a handful of terrorists, it implies one of two things: either someone at the head of that society is callous – benefitting from and supporting this successful extermination – or the leadership is clueless, without sense to embark on the necessary steps to protect the people.

Boko Haram has been killing and displacing the farmers of the north, Borno most especially for four years now, and the Kashim Shettima State government and Goodluck Jonathan administration have either been callous or clueless in response. The Borno matter is not limited to the President of Nigeria; we must be candid in our analysis in the best interest of the people.

49 Gbosas for Amaechi, Resolute Revolutionary, Visionary, Nationalist, Patriot and Democrat

In previous articles, I pointed out that His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s tie with the destiny of Rivers State is mysterious and different from that of any other political leader from the State. He is the only political leader so far who has played a key role in shaping the political future of the State who shares the same birthday with the State. Whilst he was born on May 27, 1965, Rivers State was created two years after on May 27, 1967. This, somehow, underscores why his commitment towards the emancipation and development of the State is total and unique.

Another unique aspect of this great leader from Rivers State is that he shares the same date with the day on which Nigeria celebrates the Children’s Day. Inspired by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Federal Government of Nigeria decided in 1964 – a year to the birthday of Amaechi – to set aside the May 27 every year as Nigeria’s Children’s Day. On this special day the whole Nation celebra…

Ahmad Salkida: The only Nigerian journalist with access to Boko Haram flown home to negotiate with group

Nigerian journalist, Ahmad Salkida, who previously worked for Daily Trust and Premium Times and reported extensively on Boko Haram, fled Nigeria to Dubai 2 years ago after being accused of being a Boko Haram sympathizer. He said he fled after 'his life and that of his family became endangered' after security agencies began to mistake his in-depth reporting on the terrorist group as evidence of his closeness to them.

#BringBackOurGirls Campaign and the Evolution of Hashtag Activism by Theophilus Ilevbare

Hashtag online activism has continued to prove critics wrong in the amazingly unique way it amplifies disconsolate unheard minority voices, suppressed or subdued by a repressive and despotic government. It draws attention of millions to a horrific story.

It gets better when world leaders and celebrities latch onto the hashtag as it nudges other countries to weigh in or even intervene in the crisis. Granted, a lot of persons may not know the complexities of the political, economic or security problems associated with such hashtags, and don’t bother to know, but still join the sentimental global train to amplify such stories helping to raise awareness to tales of horror. It is sometimes regarded as a wave of superficial momentary sentimentality because it is not in any way a real engagement in any attempt to resolve a complex or violent threat. However, the voice of minorities is amplified by sharing their stories in a way even the most sophisticated and networked print or electronic m…
